The history of Marshalls begun in 1956, the idea was founded by Alfred Marshall, he gathered some of the most creative entrepreneurs on the East Coast of America, like Irving Blitt, Norman Barren, Bernard Goldston, to start the business. In 1960, Frank Estey and Bernard Ribas joined them, the company begun to develop and meet profitably. In Beverly, Massachusetts, these entrepreneurs operated a self-service shop, providing homewares at affordable price. In addition, they arranged an area which provides shoes, hardware, and sporting goods for their guests, they acquire goods from separate sellers, however, the ownership of these departments cannot see the customers.


That concept was a great success. We used only ten years to become one of the leaders in off-price retail chain of the United States. We developed rapidly, making many new efforts to run the business, like selecting the post-season, overrun, close-out items directly from the manufacturers. Moreover we were liable to provide a wide range of fashionable things, with good quality and a 20-60 percent discount.

In 1976, we meet a big change. Our company was purchased by Melville Corporation, thus we grew rapidly within three years. In 1993, our company has expanded to 42 states of the United States, including Hawaii. We also tried to expand our business to downtown areas. In 1995, we were acquired by JX, which is the parent company of TJ Maxx. Our former executive: Ben Cammerata came back to create a Marshalls clone.


Now, Marshalls and TJ Maxx have a close relationship, we are sister stores to develop together. Marshalls and TJ Maxx have similar store layouts, but we are different from them, we focus more on gamily footwear and men's and juniors' departments.
