The first one was in July 2014, when Golden Gate Capital spent $2.1 billion to acquire Red Lobster from Darden Restaurants, and then Golden Gate Capital invested funds into Red Lobster to help its operation.
The second time was in October 2016, when Red Lobster's supplier, Thai Union Group, invested in Red Lobster for $575 million. The financial advisory company behind the project was the JP Morgan. After the financing, although Thai Union Group said that he would not interfere with Red Lobster's decision, Mr. Thiraphong Chansiri, the group's CEO, suggested that the company should focus on the local (North American) market in a short period of time to improve efficiency and profitability. Overseas expansion projects should be based on opportunities.
Red Lobster now has 24 stores in Japan and 7 in Malaysia. After a lapse of four years, Red Lobster has set its preferred location for overseas expansion in Shanghai, China, we hope to see the first Red Lobster in China.
